After complaints, UMN planning larger housing and dining refunds

The Board of Regents will discuss additional compensation Friday for University of Minnesota students who were urged to leave the dorms last month to slow the spread of the coronavirus.

On March 23, the U informed students of an across-the-board $1,200 credit for university-managed housing and dining service. That fell far short of what many students and parents felt they were due, and some lawmakers agreed.

In a systemwide message Wednesday, U President Joan Gabel wrote that since Gov. Tim Walz instructed Minnesotans to stay home if possible on March 25, her staff has been working on a “comprehensive student fee refund proposal that encompasses all students, at all levels, on all five of our campuses.”

Regents will hold a special meeting Friday morning to consider what Gabel called “appropriate financial credit.” The 10 a.m. meeting will be livestreamed at youtube.com/user/UMNRegents.

U students have been learning online since March 18 in an effort to control COVID-19. Many moved back home with their parents, but some students with nowhere else to go have remained in university housing.
