The mascot of a Forest Lake charter school is the dragon, so why not make dragon wings?
That’s what teacher Ann Jacobs envisioned, inspired by the “What Lifts You” project of artist Kelsey Montague. Montague has painted large wings on walls in New York City and elsewhere and encourages people to pose with them and share the photos on social media.

Students in grades 6 through 12 at Lakes International Language Academy created patterned dragon scales, put them together to form wings and hung them on a wall. Then they posed with the wings and shared the photos on social media. The photos also were showcased at the school.
The dragon is the school’s mascot because it has meaning in almost every culture, said school director Shannon Peterson. “It’s not only fierce for sports competitions but usually known for being wise and able to see beyond,” she said.
Peterson said the project also sends a message to students about social media.
“Social media is a way of sharing that doesn’t have to be about cutting people down,” she said. “It can be really positive and uplifting.”
