Minnesota is getting $21 million from the U.S. Department of Education to bolster the literacy of 30,000 students.
The money, from the Striving Readers Comprehensive Literacy Program, will be used to support teachers, nonprofits and families working to improve students’ reading skills, state officials said.
Priority will be given to schools with preschool programs and those serving large numbers of students who are low-income or who are learning English or have other special needs.
Schools can use the funding for reading coaches, summer literacy programs, teacher training, classroom supplies and data collection. The Minnesota Department of Education is expected to disburse the money by summer 2018.
