Update: It’s official — MnSCU no more.
The state’s largest higher education system is preparing to shed most of its 41-character name.
“Minnesota State” is the leading naming option for the state-run Minnesota State Colleges and Universities system that encompasses seven universities and 24 community and technical colleges.
The Legislature brought the unaffiliated institutions together in 1995, but the name — MnSCU, for short — has never caught on.
In spring 2014, MnSCU hired Minneapolis-based PadillaCRT at up to $270,000 to work on its brand. One year later, the PR firm recommended renaming the system Minnesota State.
Trustees will meet at 1:15 p.m. Tuesday to give the go-ahead to the committee working on the new name and logo.
