Terryl Brumm, who this week was named the new CEO and president of the Boys & Girls Club of the Twin Cities, plans to expand the nonprofit organization’s focus on academics. Brumm was previously vice president of development and communications and stepped into the interim leadership position in February when the previous CEO, Erin Carlin, left for a position with College Possible.

Brumm started at the nonprofit youth organization 19 years ago as a program director at a site in Minneapolis. She now oversees an annual budget of $4.3 million and eight sites, including three in St. Paul, which offer summer and after-school programming for mostly low-income kids. Brumm said she intends to expand two relatively new programs, one that helps teens make plans for post high school and another that helps younger kids with extra reading support. The clubs also offer free meals, sports and other activities and draw nearly 1,000 kids on an average summer weekday and nearly 900 during school year, she said.

“Boys & Girls Club has changed significantly as the needs of kids in the community have changed,” said Brumm. “Our focus is on academic success. Our hope is that every kid graduates on time, and we’ve found we need to go beyond just homework help and basketball, baseball and soccer.”

Brumm lives in Bloomington with her husband and two children. She has a bachelor’s degree in child psychology from the University of Minnesota and MBA from University of Phoenix.
