Gov. Tim Walz has appointed another Hmong leader to replace the late Kao Ly Ilean Her on the University of Minnesota Board of Regents.

Bo Thao-Urabe will fill an at-large seat until the Legislature appoints someone to serve the final four years of Her’s term following her death in May.

A University of Minnesota alum, Thao-Urabe is executive director and co-founder of the Coalition of Asian American Leaders.

“The loss of Regent Kao Ly Ilean Her was felt deeply within the Hmong community, the University of Minnesota and the entire state,” Walz said in a news release. “I am proud to appoint Regent Thao-Urabe, a prominent Hmong leader in Minnesota. I know her experience and values will lead the University of Minnesota — one of the leading public research universities in the nation — into a stronger future.”
