With COVID-19 cases again on the rise in Minnesota, South Washington County Schools will require masks in pre-K, elementary and middle schools when fall classes begin.

The mask requirement go into effect Aug. 23 and apply to all students, staff and visitors in facilities where 2-year-olds through eighth graders are taught, regardless of vaccination status. Classes begin the following week.

Masks are recommended, but not required, for students in ninth grade or higher. Masks must be worn on school buses by all students through grade 12. No masks are required for outdoor activities.

Students with certain medical and mental health conditions may be exempted from the mask policy.

The board of the adjacent Stillwater Area School District is expected to vote next week on a similar mask requirement, which was recommended by district administrators. It would take effect on Aug. 30.
