Six students were cited for misdemeanor unlawful assembly Friday after disrupting a meeting where the University of Minnesota Board of Regents raised tuition rates.
The U’s police department Monday identified those arrested. The school’s directory indicates all six either are enrolled for the upcoming fall semester or were enrolled this spring. They are:
- Jose Manuel Santillana Jr., 32, College of Liberal Arts
- Melinda Lee, 26, College of Education and Human Development
- Max Franz, 20, College of Liberal Arts
- Alaina DeSalvo, 29, College of Education and Human Development
- Irina Barrera, 27, College of Education and Human Development
- Rahsaan Mahadeo, 34, graduate school fellow in sociology
Lee, Barrera and Mahadeo were among the 13 students arrested and held overnight last year several hours into a diversity protest in the Morrill Hall office of university President Eric Kaler.
On Friday, the students were cited and released.
The regents meeting was postponed for about 20 minutes as students chanted slogans demanding tuition relief and better learning conditions for underrepresented students.
The board raised tuition 2.5 percent for Minnesota residents and 7.5 percent for nonresidents but also authorized increased need-based scholarships.
