Central High School’s auditorium will be named for its longtime principal, pending approval of the St. Paul school board.
Mary Mackbee is retiring this summer after 25 years as Central’s principal and 50 years in the school district.
Mackbee “has shown enthusiasm and support for music and the arts at Central Senior High School, and has attended almost every band, orchestra and choir concert since she became principal,” assistant superintendent Theresa Battle wrote in a request to the school board.
The board will be asked to approve the request Tuesday night.
School district procedures say the district should “avoid” renaming facilities for living people.
However, the board last year agreed to rename Harding High School’s gym floor for retiring athletics director Gerry Keenan.
At least three other principals are retiring from the district this summer: Mike McCollor of Washington Technology Magnet; Melissa McCollor of Nokomis Montessori; and Celese Carty, Crossroads Montessori.
