DULUTH — A judge has increased the damages to be received by former University of Minnesota Duluth women’s hockey coach Shannon Miller in her discrimination suit against the school.

U.S. District Judge Patrick Schiltz on Wednesday awarded Miller $461,278 in front pay and future benefits, while denying her motion to be reinstated to her former position.

A federal jury last spring awarded Miller $3.74 million in past lost wages and benefits and past emotional distress, but the remaining damages could only be determined by the judge.

Miller sought to be reinstated or receive up to an additional $3 million in damages, while UMD attorneys argued that she was not entitled to any additional damages because she failed to make adequate efforts to secure new employment after her contract was not renewed in the 2014-15 season.

Schiltz’s ruling brings the sum Miller stands to receive to $4.21 million. UMD has said it intends to bring a motion to set aside the verdict.
