The cost of attending the University of Minnesota’s highly rated College of Science and Engineering will grow by $2,000 per year.
The Board of Regents on Thursday agreed to adopt a surcharge modeled after one at its Carlson School of Business. Current CSE students will not have to pay it, and neither will low-income students.
After four years, when it’s fully implemented, the surcharge will generate an estimated $9 million per year. That will help pay for faculty and facilities and enable a 300-student expansion at the college.
Steve Sviggum and four other regents Thursday sought to make the surcharge $1,500 and applicable to all new students, but the motion failed.
EASTCLIFF RENOVATION APPROVED
Meeting as the finance committee Thursday, regents also voted to spend up to $970,000 renovating the president’s mansion before Joan Gabel moves in.
Because the work won’t be done by July 1, when Gabel takes over for Eric Kaler, the U will find temporary housing for the incoming president.
The Eastcliff project involves new heating infrastructure and updated electrical wiring, as well as any asbestos and lead removal, if necessary.
Regents unanimously approved the project without discussion Thursday.
